The interview continued, the guest’s voice smooth as he danced around the anchor’s questions. He spoke with a confidence that seemed to defy his circumstances, brushing off concerns with a flick of his wrist.
“It’s not a big deal,” he said, eyes gleaming with a hint of defiance. “I’ve got it under control.”
His words stuck with me, resonating in a way I couldn’t shake off. They mirrored the same false bravado I had been using to convince myself that everything was fine.
“You okay in here?” a voice interrupted my thoughts. It was Mark, a coworker from down the hall, popping his head in.
“Yeah,” I replied, forcing a smile. “Just taking a breather.”
Mark nodded, a look of understanding passing between us. “HR meetings are rough,” he said, before retreating back to his own world of deadlines and demands.
It was comforting, in a way, to know I wasn’t the only one feeling the squeeze of the office pressures.
But comforting or not, it didn’t change the fact that I had to face whatever was coming next.
